One goal I have set with my mentor is to stay on top of things so I don't become overwhelmed and feel like I can't do it. I feel like I am doing good with my goal. My mentor, suggested I get an agenda to out everything, that way I can look at my week and plan accordingly. I have taken that advice and out it towards my goal and current life. I put school work, as well as my work schedule in it so that I know what I have to do in my coming week.”

- Emily, Lazer Link Mentee

For OCC, student engagement equals student success.

Leaders at OCC not only believe that student-to-student interaction creates the type of sense of belonging that leads to increased student persistence, but they also believe these interactions can alleviate administrative capacity concerns. To ensure they achieve desired outcomes at scale, OCC turned to Mentor Collective to create their Lazer Link peer mentoring program that connects first-year students with returning students.

The program launched in the summer of 2021 and has already achieved some of OCC’s most desired outcomes.

— 37% of mentorship pairs have reported at least three conversations, which makes a student significantly more likely to persist
— Mentee participation is above Mentor Collective’s benchmark data (38% sign-ups vs. 33% benchmark)
— 5,800+ SMS text messages have been exchanged between mentors and mentees, creating conversation trends that provide campus leadership an authentic view into what students care about most

Watch this on-demand recording to learn why leaders at OCC turned to peer mentorship, how their mentoring program enhanced their existing student success offerings, and why community colleges have found it valuable to join Mentor Collective’s two-year institution cohort.
